Mud Kitchen

We have a ‘Mud Kitchen’ in our fantastic outdoor area, this is available every day to the children, and it is a place where they can go and experiment and explore. There are a range of utensils and containers and of course MUD!

The Mud Kitchen allows the children to problem solve and make their own judgements. It allows the children to be curious and to investigate the cause and effects of mixing and adding water, mud and other natural ingredients.

It supports the 7 areas of learning within the Early Years Foundation stage (EYFS) Curriculum, in different ways than is available in the usual classroom environment. This way of learning is then enhanced through the Forest School ethos which the nursery also follows as the children get older.

The potential outcomes from the Mud Kitchen include;

  • Development of language and communication skills
  • Improved concentration and development of imagination skills
  • Increased self confidence
  • Improved social skills

It also allows the children to think positively and to make their own judgments, allows them to think ‘what if……’.

Also the children can explore and make concoctions to their own recipes and be with in the realm of magic and fantasy just like we did when  we were children making ‘potions’, ‘perfumes’ and ‘mud cakes’ in the back garden!
